Ultrasound Preparations

 

THE FOLLOWING ULTRASOUND EXAMINATIONS  REQUIRE A DIETARY PREPARATION PRIOR TO THE EXAM:

Abdomen

Abdomen (RUQ/GB/Liver)                  

Gallbladder

Liver

Retroperitoneal (i.e. IVC, pediatric kidneys, pancreas)           

 

Dietary Instruction

Adults- please remain NPO (Nothing to eat or drink) preferably after midnight the day before your exam. Or, if that is not possible, please do not eat or drink six (6-8) to eight hours prior to your exam.  

Infants – Please do not eat or drink 2 hours prior to the appointment time (hold one feeding).  

 

NOTE: The patient may take oral meds for hypertension or thyroid with just a swallow of water. All other meds must be refrained until after the procedure. Please consult with your physician before discontinuing any medication.

 

THE FOLLOWING ULTRASOUND EXAMINATIONS  REQUIRE SPECIAL  PREPARATION PRIOR TO THE EXAM:

Pelvic  w/IVT   

Complete OB                        

 

PREPARATION

The patient will need to finish drinking 32oz of water one hour prior to exam.  Do not void (urinate). Water is the preferred liquid for intake but may be substituted with other beverages. Please ask your technologist for other liquids  options.      

                                             

THE FOLLOWING ULTRASOUND (SONOGRAM) PROCEDURES REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING  PREPARATION.

Axilla

Breast

 

Do not wear deodorant, perfume or powder in the breast or axilla area.
