Post Sedation Instructions For Your Child

EACH CHILD RESPONDS IN DIFFERENT WAYS TO SEDATION.

The nurse woke your child up after the test was completed.  Your child may fall asleep again when you get home.  This is normal.

Your child may sleep for 3-8 hours and will be drowsy for sometime after the test.  Let your child sleep, but wake him/her up frequently and encourage him/her to drink fluids.

If your child is of walking age, an adult should be with the child at all times to protect him/her from falling.

We suggest that you carry your child to and from the car.  A car seat or seat belt should be used.

If your child is less than 18 months old, you may feed him/her as usual.

If your child is older than 18 months, you may begin feeding with clear fluids, such as apple juice, water or soda.  If your child does not vomit, you may offer solid food.

If an IV was used during the test and your child complains of pain at the IV site, apply a warm towel for a few minutes.

If you have any problems or questions about the sedation your child received, please call the nurse at our facility.  If you are unable to reach her, call your doctor or an emergency room of your choice.  If your child visits an emergency room in the next 24 hours, please make sure you take this form with you.
