Instructions for parents of children to be sedated for MRI or CT Scans

1.    Clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to sedation time.  Solids (Milk & Formula) up to 6 hours prior to the sedation time.

2.    The night before the exam, please keep your child up until at least midnight or 1:00 AM, and wake him/her up at 05:00 AM.  Please DO NOT allow your child to take naps during the day and do not allow him/her to sleep on the way to the facility.  The more sleep-deprived your child is, the less sedation will be required.

3.    Please continue your child’s current medications unless otherwise discussed with you by the physician.  Please bring the medications with you or a list of medications.

4.    Due to the cool temperature of the MRI room, please dress your child in warm and comfortable clothing with no metal snaps or metal buttons.  Please remove all jewelry from your child prior to exam (earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc.).

5.    The physician and the nurse will determine the sedation which will be used to sedate your child.
