DXA is the acronym for dual energy x-ray absorption. This is a very common test used to diagnose bone mineral density.

A DXA examination takes approximately 15 minutes, and is ordered by a physician to diagnose osteoporosis and assess fracture risk, or to monitor response to treatment.  Osteoporosis is a very serious condition affecting millions of Americans, 80% of whom are women. Osteoporosis is a disease that reduces the strength of your bones, causing them to become brittle and more prone to fractures.

Many physicians order this exam as part of a woman’s health series; it is frequently ordered in conjunction with a mammogram.

A baseline bone density scan must meet Medicare criteria in order to be reimbursed. The criteria includes menopause or postmenopausal status, 23 months since previous scan, high risk medications, hyperparathyroidism and renal disease. Patients with non-Medicare insurance should check their individual policies for bone density testing coverage.

AMI’s Medical Center location is now offering this service.
